Artist’s Statement

Combining elements of paper collage, an experimental tape/ink transfer, deconstructed-found-photography, and layering; I attempt to mimic the elements of painting. I work on canvas for the material associations of painting it evokes, and the history of painting it poses. My painting “ground” is layered and collaged paper. The deconstructed layers of ink from consumer catalogues become the “paint.” The paintings’ finished surfaces are layers of clear tape functioning as a substitute for high gloss varnish, a kind of  “contemporary glaze.” I’m pushing down tape onto the pages and lifting off ink, then layering piece by piece, manipulating the tape to make hard edges, fragmented strokes, and nuanced color fields. This is how my process relates more to painting rather than cut-and-paste collage. Combining these processes—collage, transfer, and line drawing— tricks the eye into seeing painterly effects while subverting the traditional classifications of both of painting and collage.

Appropriated images reassembled from disseminated photographs of everyday objects are in constant fluctuation. I’m interested in how the images we see, relate to the words we use to describe them, and how non-representational work can sequester rational descriptive logic, and reinforce formal qualities of objectivity. The further we break down a logical structure of information, greater is the propensity for emotive/irrational responses to emerge, creating a reconciliation between order, entropy, and emotion. Balancing the automatic process, chance, creating structure back from near chaos, distorting the perception of everyday objects, draws attention to layered meaning.
