Sarah Ratchye’s works represent her fascination with the dreams and realization of space exploration and the human desire for transcendence toward the divine.  Her practice involves research into religious, psychic, and cultural effects of imagining, creating, and launching increasingly elaborate anti-gravitational devices into outer space.

“The creative determination that one’s effort and knowledge will lead outside the realm of possibility is similar to the hope and expectations offered by religious belief. Astronauts, having pierced heaven, achieved a physical transcendence, and as depicted in my works, an experience f the divine that changed their relationship to the earth, the universe, and the earth-bound”.

“I am exploring the contradictions and fantasies of humans in space as an interconnected story from dream to reality to myth.  I see the astronaut, the product of a secular and scientific endeavor, as returning from outer space as an icon, representing a religious and scientific narrative.  The astronauts in my paintings and drawings exist as saints of the space age.  That is, the images express the uncanny and unique state of transcending gravity and experiencing what astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell described as “an ecstasy of unity”.

The small space icons show Ratchye’s graphic astronaut icon symbol within a field of gold leaf. The astronaut floats in a space of grace and alienation. Repetition of the same image, the reference to a cultural narrative, and gold leaf ground, direct interpretation of the works as icons, or signs, whose meaning is timeless and at the same time, continuously qualified.
